Peak At Our Week: December 1-5

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We had another busy week in kindergarten learning all sorts of new skills and reviewing some others.

In Social Studies we learned about how to make friends.

We compared and contrasted pictures of  children sharing and not sharing. We discussed body language, expressions and the location of objects. Students were then paired up with another student and had to work together to redraw a picture to show them sharing. Afterwards, we came together and presented the pictures.

We practiced asking a friend to play. Students received a picture of what they wanted to play with. They had to use their five steps to ask someone to play until they found their match.
1. Approach the person. 2. Look them in the eyes. 3. Smile. 4. Ask them to play. 5. Yes, thank you for asking or No, thank you I am going to play......

We started our addition unit this week! To start we created rekenreks to work with. These are great tools to help with number sense, addition, and subtraction. Each student will  have this handy tool, that they created, in their resource bag throughout the year!

We played a fun game with cups and counters to practice counting on. Each group had nine counters. Partner one randomly put the counters into two cups and gave one cup to partner 2. Partner 2 count the counters in his/her cup and counted on to nine. They used the other cup to check their work.

We also practiced showing the different ways to make numbers using two sided counters.

As always another fun week! Next week should be even more exciting! We are packing our suitcases, getting our passports ready, and flying around the world to learn about different holidays and traditions!
