Basic Needs Song

Enjoy!

Pet Rocks

On Friday we finished up our unit of living vs non living. I started the lesson off my telling them that everyone was going to be able to take home a pet. You should have seen their faces! Some of them had faces of joy, some faces of terror, and some instantly said their parents would never let them take home a pet.  We created a chart to give reasons why a non living pet would be easier to take care of compared to a living pet. We then were able to create our pet rock. After we created our pet rock we completed a form about our pet rock. On the form we had to draw what it looked like, what we used to create it, if it was living or non living and give evidence why, how we were going to take care of it, and we were also able to name it!

Gummy Worm vs. Earth Worm

We continued to learn about living and non living throughout the week. On Thursday, we compared gummy worms and earth worms. The students had to draw a picture, measure each, describe what it felt like, and decided if it was living or nonliving and provided their evidence for their reasoning. We had a lot of fun looking at the worms. Some of us at least!

Living and Non Living Walk

We have been learning about how to differentiate from living and non living things. Today we went on a walk to see if we could find living and non living things by answering a few essential questions:
Does it need air?
Does it need food?
Does it move?
Does it grow?
Is it Living?

The students loved identify that a slide was not a living thing and that the little ants were living things!

Tomorrow we are going to get a hands on approach to our learning and compare a gummy worm and an earth worm. Check back at the end of the week for what I can imagine are going to be some exciting pictures!

Pen Pals

For the past few weeks we have been learning how to write messages and letters. On Friday we received a wonderful surprise. Kindergarteners from Kansas City, MO write a personal letter to each and every student. All of them were eager to write their new friend back. We are all very excited to spend the rest of the year writing back to them. WE HAVE PEN PALS!!!

Background Knowledge: A partner teacher of mine from 2010 moved to Kansas City a few years back. She is teaching kindergarten up there and we thought it would be not only beneficial to improve our students writing skills but to form a bond and learn about someone that is living a completely different type of living. It is very exciting to see them connect that they are not the only ones in kindergarten!

Armadilly Chili Night is next Thursday, April 10th! I hope to see all of you there for an exciting end of the year brain break! If you are going to cook chili (which would be greatly appreciate) please let me know so we know how much to expect!

Scholastic Book Orders will be placed on  April 15th. Scholastic is an inexpensive way to stock up on books for the summer to make sure your child does fall into the "summer slide group".

I can't believe this year is almost over... I feel like it was just yesterday that your baby came into my class and now he/ she is growing up and about to be a first grader.
